10 Nigerian artistes to watch out for in 2010

2010 the magical year for Nigerian Music. Something huge is about to happen. For one i am pretty sure that the grammy committee would listen to at least one of these artistes, not just 'cos 2 of them have the US in them but 'cos they are fabulous. I also added a hot list of smoking producers that will dominate 2010. Trust me this is more than my opinion. More so most of them have been underground for way too long ...but lets just call them Rookies. They all drop albums in 2010 hopefully.

BLINDSIDE MOVIE

I must say that this movie deserves a mention.
Blindside had me so teary eyed, just for that its got a g-stamp on it, This movie summarizes what good moview should look like. The storyline features Michael Oher, an offensive lineman who plays for the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL.

The film follows Oher from his impoverished upbringing, through his years at Wingate Christian School, his adoption by Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, and on to his position as one of the most highly coveted prospects in college football.

Blindside stars Sandra Bullocks who has so far won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role both for the Blindside movie.

The movie which was released in 2009 and was shot on a Budget of $29 million was directed by John Lee Hancock who also co wrote the script with the original author of the book Michael Lewis.

This is definately a must watch.

i-solation, ipad & apple

i-solation

It is no longer news that Apple has announced the 'ipad' its latest product offering. But what may come as news to some is the fact that Apple Inc. as an entity is managed like a cult-in translation, its management aint that different from the chinese government in style.

Now before you conclude about this article, this is not a bashing of Apple Inc. management style, but an analysis of how Apple Inc. led by Steve Jobs has used the concept of isoloation to better its lot.

The use of excessive divide and conquer techniques, oaths of secrecy by staff, isolation (of the industrial design team) has partly been responsible for the revolutionary success of Apple.

Following the announcement of the apple ipad this wednesday, mixed reviews have greeted the product but one that has caught my eye is the fact that 3 other brands are laying claim to the trademark 'ipad' claiming apple had no right to use their registered trademark. This i blame on isolation. A company that is very much in the system would know what the industry pulse reads.

Now here's the issue. A few years ago some dedicated BMW customers protested to the management of BMW that they up their industrial designers such that the newer models of the brand would be more sleek and very intune with the times, In responding the management announced that their brand was not for the masses and that if the protesters didnt like their cars they shouldn't buy them. Which as far as concerned was a BIG slap to customers. Finally when reality of dwindling sales hit years ago the latest specs of BMW cars would attest to the fact that they had to cave in to the pressure from customers.

For a very long time the process of bringing new products to the market which include market research, sampling and testing have been grossly ignored by Apple, and they have gotten away with this so much because for some reason they have a genuis as the VP of Industrial Design who keeps coming up with irrestable designs that work.

its been said that The Industrial Designers @ Apple led by Jonathan Ive work out of a secluded cove with in the Apple Inc. campus and they report directly to the CEO Steve Jobs directly who also is the only one that has direct access to the work enviroment of the designers. These designers are made to sign NDA's to ensure non of their desings are ever leaked. Apple does not do public BETA testings-PERIOD!

This strategy helps drive all sorts of rumors and industry speculations about expected apple product. Th online tech media fabricates all sorts which in turn transcends to good hype and PR for the potential product. This is how it worked with th iphone. And this in my conclusion is about the cheapest way to market Apple products: WORD OF MOUTH.

In summary my ramblings are simple: the concept of isolation is a two edged sword as much as it works best for brands like Apple that have been strategically placed which causes them to force products on its customers without asking customer opinion, it could also backfire just like it would soon become apparent.

The 'ipad' was over hyped and expectations became very high... but in the end Uncle Steve would learn again that the CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. plus how long will it take Apple to realise that the day they lift the AT&T caveat off iphones they would see maximised global sales. Well i guess they better have a good reason...

fresh start, magical year

I feel like i just crawled out from under a rock.
Reality of life is that things ain't what they seem most of the time.
This is my first post of the year, and as i write this a lot has happened to me and around me.

for starters uncle umaru is still @ large, the eagles fumbled their way to the semi finals of the African Nations Cup 2010 and Dipo Dina was assassinated last night, Haiti is 13days in ruins....

I could go on and on, but these are not the images i had in dec 2009 in my a head of 2010 the magical year. It was all supposed to make perfect sense. You know what they say: " it has to get worse before it gets better"...but the thing is i'm not so sure about that statement, all i know is Nigeria is in reset mode.
sometimes when things get fixed fundamentally it doesn't matter how powerful people think they are, things just get fixed.

IS HE DEAD?

Lots of people did say it!

In his response he challenged his opponents to a game of squash saying he could play the the game for 5hrs non stop. Well somebody tell me why isn't he sitted in his chair.

I don'y mean to sound unpatriotic, but i think we should stop visualizing the No. 1 position as a business endeavor. especially when it concerns the lives of over 150million individuals.

I'M JUST SAYING

>>Out & About

This must already be the most silent blog in the entire universe.
sometimes we get involved in activities that tend to overwhelm us and we loose control
of the time to do the things we love.

Well, alot has happened to me since my last post: mostly the making of a movie premiere
in Lagos, various business offers, a freaky birthday, a truck load of meetings...trips, trips and more trips amongst others.

The Premiere of The Tenant movie which celebrates the hustle of the average African emigrant is scheduled to hold on the 12th of December, 2009 at Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, at The Palms, Lekki, Lagos.

Before the premiere, there will be a special screening of the Tenant to the media in Lagos Nigeria on the 24th of November, 2009. To be a part of this email:

AFRICAN STARS DAZZLE AT NAIROBI EDITION OF MTV AFRICA MUSIC AWARDS WITH ZAIN

Nairobi, 10 October 2009: Nameless (Kenya) and M.I. (Nigeria) were the big winners of the evening at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain. The two artists took home two trophies each at the pan-African music celebration, held at the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani, Kenya on 10 October 2009.

Nameless won the coveted Best Male artist category at the Awards, which honours and celebrates Africa’s contemporary music stars, as well as the Listener’s Choice category which recognizes the biggest radio hits of the year. M.I. clinched an impressive duo, scoring for Best New Act and Best Hip Hop.

Best Female went to Kenyan star Amani, making it two in a row for Kenyan female performers after Wahu’s win in Abuja in 2008.

Ghanaian star Samini put dancehall firmly on the map with a win for Best Performer, a fitting tribute to his trademark high energy live performances. Artist of the Year went to D’Banj – showing the Nigerian star remains at the top of his game after a triple win in 2008 and his MTV Europe Music Awards win in 2007.

African artists scored three awards: MAMA Legend (Lucky Dube), HHP (Best Video) and Zebra & Giraffe (Best Alternative).

Host Wyclef Jean set the uplifting tone for the evening with an electrifying live set including monster hits ‘Sweetest Girl’, ‘No Woman No Cry‘ and ‘Ready or Not’.

Hip hop phenomenon Akon, making a long anticipated trip to Kenya, rose to the challenge, rousing the crowd with a show-stopping version of his track, Beautiful.

Dr Saad Al Barrak, CEO of Zain, the co-sponsor of the MAMAs, said the evening confirmed the huge talent that Africa possesses and the influence it had upon the world of music. “Much of the music we listen to today has its roots in this great continent. I cannot emphasize strongly enough what a privilege it is for Zain to lend its name to such an event. In doing so, we are both keeping alive the flame of Africa’s cultural consciousness and delivering on our promise to bring you “A wonderful world.”

In keeping with the show’s purpose of bringing Africa together, the MAMA awards featured multiple collaborations between artists from different countries and music genres – mixing up hip hop with R&B, alternative, soul and dancehall, among others. Among the collaborations thrilling the 4,000 strong crowd was a three way tie-up featuring HHP, Brickz and 2FACE, and a stunning collaboration between Kenyan divas Amani and Wahu and Tanzania’s A.Y. and a dramatic hip-hop/rock mash-up between Zebra & Giraffe and Da LES.

The evening closed with a moving performance of Michael Jackson’s crowd pleaser ‘Wanna Be Starting Something’ with Akon and all the other performers.

The My Video Award was won by Patricke-Stevie Moungondo from Congo Brazzaville, who beat thousands of amateur singers to win the coveted MAMA trophy, in the form of a ‘retro/futuristic’ microphone balanced on top of a globe of the world with Africa poised symbolically at the top.

Among the many show highlights were Wyclef’s opening number and a touching tribute to MAMA Legend Award winner Lucky Dube by Wyclef, Nameless and Samini, in honour of the iconic South African reggae star tragically killed in 2007. The ‘One Time’ star also called attention to the plight of the 17 million people in East Africa affected by drought and famine.

Performers at MAMA 2009 included Akon, Wahu, M.I., Samini, HHP, Da L.E.S, Zebra & Giraffe, Lizha James, STL, Amani, Nameless, A.Y., Lira, 2FACE and Blu3.

Guest presenters included Zamajobe, Kel, Redsan, Churchill, the cast of the MTV Staying Alive Ignite TV series, Shuga.

The winners of the MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain 2009 are:

BEST FEMALE Amani (Kenya)
BEST MALE Nameless (Kenya)
BEST PERFORMER Samini (Ghana)
BEST GROUP P Square (Nigeria)
BEST ALTERNATIVE Zebra and Giraffe (South Africa)

MTV Hottest MCs 2009: top 10 list

I'll bet its no longer news that the MTV Hottest MCs 2009 List is out with Jayz emerging as the hottest MC numero uno. The greatest upset of the top ten list came from DRAKE the canadian actor turned MC, who locked the No. 3 spot ahead of Kanye and 50cents. nuf said check out the list below::

#1.Jay-Z
#2.Lil Wayne
#3.Drake
#4.Kanye West
#5.Rick Ross
#6.Gucci Mana
#7.Young Jeezy
#8.Fabulous
#9.50cent
#10.Raekwon

As in 2007 and 2008 the list, determined by the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust, is based on an MC's achievements right now, rather than an entire career. The Criteria is based on a combination of rhyme skill, flow and how those things are implemented musically as the main factors. The Brain Trust also considered buzz, impact, commercial success -- sales, airplay, business ventures, Web presence, endorsements and helping to spawn other artists' careers -- and the intangible, impact: Can an artist not only contribute to the rap game but influence cultural shifts? Are they trendsetters? All of these factors -- and the results of our audience poll, which closed last week and got a vote at the Round Table during the Brain Trust's debate -- contributed to deciding who is the Hottest MC in the Game.
